Todd: OK. Cat, we're back. We're gonna talk about things you can do.

Cat: OK.

Todd: Can you cook?

Cat: Not really.

Todd: No.

Cat: Well, I can but not very well.

Todd: OK. What do you do for dinner?

Cat: Buy take-away food.

Todd: OK. When you buy take-away food, what do you buy?

Cat: Normally, stuff from the supermarket you can just throw in the microwave, ready meals. Not from take-away from a pizza place or a restaurant but just stuff that I can cook at home.

Todd: OK. And can you sing?

Cat: Not at all.

Todd: No?

Cat: No.

Todd: OK. Now, we're in Japan.. have you ever been to Karaoke here in Japan?

Cat: No.

Todd: No?

Cat: And I really don't want to go either.

Todd: OK. Can you play any musical instruments?

Cat: I used to be able to play the piano and the guitar. But I haven't played them for a long time. I can remember a bit but not much.

Todd: Which one did you prefer the most?

Cat: Guitar. The piano was too difficult.

Todd: Oh, really? Did you take lessons?

Cat: Yes, And I had to play scales all the time and it was really boring.

Todd: I hardly ever got to play any tunes.

Cat: OK. Alright. Thanks a lot Cat.

A 'musical instrument' is something that you play in order to make music, such as a guitar, piano or saxophone.

  1. I would very much like to learn a musical instrument.
  2. When you play a musical instrument you have to make sure that you practice every day.

scale

I had to play scales all the time and it was really boring.

A 'scale' is a series of musical notes that all have different tones.

Notice the following:

  1. Have you learned all of your scales?
  2. I can not really play tunes yet I have only just learned my scales.

tune

I hardly ever got to play any tunes.

A 'tune' is a melody or a song.

Notice the following:

  1. That is a really nice tune.
  2. I do not know the words so I only hum the tune.
