Bài 1: Barbara is going for a long walk in the country. You think she should take:

Ngữ pháp cách sử dụng In Case

I. Nghĩa “ In case”

- In case là một trong những cụm từ được dùng nhiều nhất trong tiếng anh và có nghĩa là “ phòng khi”

II. Cấu trúc và cách dùng

- Trong một câu, in case mang nghĩa là “phòng khi, đề phòng”. Ta dùng in case để dự đoán một sự việc/hành động nào đó có khả năng xảy ra (the possibility of something happening)

- In case + một mệnh đề (S + V)

Ex:

- I’ll buy some more food in case Elsa comes. (Tôi mua thêm đồ ăn phòng khi Elsa đến)

- Jane might come tonight. I don’t want to go out in case she comes. (Jane có thể đến vào tối nay. Tôi không muốn ra ngoài phòng khi cô ấy đến).

Lưu ý:

- Không nên sử dụng “will” sau in case. Thay vào đó, hãy sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn (present simple tense) khi đề cập đến tương lai (Thì hiện tại mang nghĩa tương lai trong tiếng Anh).

- Ta sử dụng từ just sau in case (just in case) trong trường hợp mà khả năng xảy ra điều phỏng đoán là rất nhỏ.

Ex: It may rain – You’d better take an umbrella just in case it does. (Trời có thể mưa – Bạn nên mang ô phòng khi trời mưa

Phân biệt in case với các cấu trúc dễ nhầm lẫn

In case và in case of

- In case + clause (= Because it may/might happen)

Ex: In case I forget, please remind me of my promise (Phòng khi tôi quên, hãy nhắc tôi về lời hứa của tôi nhé)

- In case of + N (= if there is/there are)

Ex: In case of emergency, you should call 113 (Trong trường hợp khẩn cấp, bạn nên gọi cho 113)

In case và if

Is case cũng có thể được dịch là “nếu” giống như if. Tuy nhiên, in case không hoàn toàn giống if. Ta sẽ nhìn thấy sự khác nhau ở in case và if theo ví dụ dưới đây:

In case	If
We’ll study English in case we have a English test. – Ở đây, sử dụng in case có nghĩa chúng tôi có thể có bài kiểm tra và chúng tôi sẽ học tiếng Anh. Dù có bài kiểm tra tiếng Anh hay không, chúng tôi cũng đã học tiếng Anh rồi.	We’ll study English if we have a English test. – Khi sử dụng if có nghĩa, chúng tôi sẽ chỉ học tiếng Anh khi có bài kiểm tra. Còn nếu không có bài kiểm tra, chúng tôi sẽ không học.
