Ngữ pháp So sánh bằng, không bằng

• Với so sánh bằng, chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc:

  as + tính từ + as

• Với so sánh không bằng, chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc

  not as/not so + tính từ + as

Ví dụ:

A boy of sixteen is often as tall as his/other.

He was as white as a sheet.

Manslaughter is not as/so bad as murder

Your coffee is not as/so good as the coffee my mother makes.

So sánh hơn trong tiếng Anh

Với so sánh hơn, chúng ta sử dụng than theo cấu trúc:

so sánh hơn của tính từ + than

The new tower blocks are much higher than the old buildings.

He makes/ewer mistakes than you (do).

He is stronger than I expected = I didn't expect him to be so strong.

If was more expensive than I thought = I didn't think it would be so expensive

Trong tiếng Anh thông tục, khi than được bỏ qua, bạn có thể sử dụng dạng so sánh nhất thay cho so sánh hơn. Chẳng hạn khi chỉ so sánh hai đối tượng nào đó (chẳng hạn như hai cách thức để hoàn thành một công việc nào đó), bạn có thể sử dụng:

This is the best way ...

So sánh nhất trong tiếng Anh

Để so sánh ba hay nhiều người/sự vật, bạn sử dụng so sánh nhất có cấu trúc:

the + so sánh nhất của tính từ + (danh từ/of + danh từ)

Ghi chú: Phần xuất hiện trong dấu ngoặc đơn là tùy ý, nghĩa là có cũng được, không có cũng được.

This is the oldest theatre in London.

The youngest of the family was the most successful.

Đặc biệt, cách sử dụng này rất hay xuất hiện trong các mệnh đề quan hệ.

It/This is the best beer (that) I have ever drunk.

It/This was the worst film (that) he had ever seen.

He is the kindest man (that) I have ever met.

It was the most worrying day (that) he had ever spent

Bạn ghi nhớ là nên sử dụng ever ở đây và không nên sử dụng never. Tuy nhiên, để diễn đạt ý nghĩa như trên và trong một câu mang tính so sánh, bạn có thể sử dụng never như sau:

I have never drunk better beer.

I have never met a kinder man.

He had never spent a more worrying day.

Ghi chú: cấu trúc most + tính từ mà không có THE có cùng ý nghĩa với very.

You are most kind = You are very kind.

Với tính từ most, khi mang nghĩa là very, được sử dụng chủ yếu với các tính từ có hai hoặc nhiều âm tiết

Ví dụ cho các tính từ này là:

annoying, apologetic, disobedient, encouraging, exciting, helpful, important, misleading

Mẫu câu: the + so sánh hơn … the + so sánh hơn

HOUSE AGENT: Do you want a big house?

ANN: Yes, the bigger the better.

TOM: But the smaller it is, the less it will cost us to heat

Mẫu câu: so sánh hơn + and + so sánh hơn

The weather is getting colder and colder.

He became less and less interested.

Cách so sánh các hành động bởi sử dụng danh động từ/động từ nguyên thể

Riding a horse is not as easy as riding a motor cycle.

It is nicer/more fun to go with someone than to go alone

Cách so sánh bởi sử dụng like (giới từ) và alike

Tom is very like Bill.

Bill and Tom are very alike.

He keeps the central heating full on.

It's like living in the tropics

Cách so sánh bởi sử dụng like và as

• Về mặt lý thuyết, like chỉ được sử dụng với danh từ, đại từ hoặc danh động từ:

  He swims like a fish.

  You look like a ghost.

  Be like Peter/him: go jogging.

  The windows were all barred.

  It was like being in prison.

• Liên từ as được sử dụng khi có một Finite Verb (gọi là Động từ giới hạn hay động từ mang thì -- phần giải thích bên dưới) trong câu:

  Do as Peter does: go jogging.

  Why don't you cycle to work as we do?

  Nhưng trong tiếng Anh thông tục, like thường được sử dụng thay thể cho as trong câu:

  Cycle to work like we do.

So sánh với cấu trúc like + danh từ và as + danh từ

He worked like a slave, (very hard indeed)

He worked as a slave. (He was a slave.)

She used her umbrella as a weapon. (She struck him with it.)

Finite Verb và Non-finite Verb trong tiếng Anh

Đúng ra phần này mình sẽ trình bày trong chương về Phân loại động từ, nhưng để tiện cho các bạn theo dõi chương này, mình sẽ trình bày luôn tại đây.

• Finite Verb (động từ giới hạn hay động từ mang thì): là động từ hòa hợp với chủ ngữ về ngôi và số, thông thường bằng cách biến đổi phần đuôi của động từ.

• Non-finite Verb (động từ không giới hạn hay động từ không mang thì): là động từ không biến đổi hình thức dù chủ ngữ của nó ở số ít hay số nhiều, ở thì hiện tại hay quá khứ.

Ví dụ:

She SEES him running in the garden.

Trong đó:

sees là động từ giới hạn

running là động từ không giới hạn

Sở dĩ sees được gọi là động từ giới hạn vì sees biến đổi theo chủ ngữ (she) của nó. Tức là nếu chủ ngữ biến thành They thì động từ sẽ biến thành see. Ngoài ra, ở quá khứ, see sẽ biến thành saw. Ngược lại động từ running không biến đổi dù chủ ngữ của nó he/she ở số ít hay số nhiều you/they, dù thời gian ở hiện tại hay quá khứ.
