Bài 1: Put in there is/was or it is/was. Some sentences are question (is there .... ? / is it .... ? .... ) and some are negative (isn't /wasn't)

1. The journey took a long time. There was a lot of traffic.

Ngữ pháp cách sử dụng There và It

A. Cách sử dụng there và it trong tiếng Anh

Cách sử dụng there

Ví dụ:

- There's a new restaurant in King street.

(Có một nhà hàng mới ở phố King.)

- Yes, I know. I went there last night. It's very good.

(Vâng tôi biết, tôi đã đến đó tối qua. Nó rất tốt.)

Ta dùng there... khi chúng ta lần đầu tiên nói về một vật nào đó, để nói rằng nó tồn tại:

Ví dụ:

- There's a new restaurant in King street. (không nói 'A new restaurant is in King street')

(Có một nhà hàng mới ở phố King.)

- The journey took a long time. There was a lot of traffic. (không nói 'It was a lot of traffic')

(Chuyến đi mất nhiều thời gian. Có nhiều xe cộ trên đường quá.)

- Things are much more expensive now. There has been a big rise in the cost of living.

(Hiện giờ mọi thứ đắt hơn nhiều. Đã có sự gia tăng lớn về giá cả sinh hoạt.)

Cách sử dụng it

It = một vật, địa điểm, hành động, hoàn cảnh cụ thể...

Ví dụ:

- We went to a new restaurant. It's very good. (it = restaurant)

(Chúng tôi đã tới nhà hàng mới. Nó rất tốt.)

- "Was the traffic bad?" "Yes, it was terrible." (it = the traffic)

("Giao thông tồi lắm không?" "Có, rất tồi tệ.")

- I wasn't expecting them to come. It (= that they came) was the complete surprise.

(Tôi đã không mong chờ họ tới. Điều đó quả thật bất ngờ.)

Hãy so sánh:

- I don't like this town. There's nothing to do here. It's a boring place.

(Tôi không thích thị trấn này. Không có việc gì để làm ở đây cả. Thật là một nơi chán ngắt.)

Lưu ý rằng there cũng có nghĩa to/at/in that place:

- The new restaurant is very good. I went there (= to the restaurant) last night.

(Nhà hàng mới rất tốt. Tôi đã tới đó tối qua.)

- When we arrived at the party, there were already a lot of people there.

(Khi chúng tôi đến bữa tiệc, đã có nhiều người ở đó. (= tại bữa tiệc))

B. Cách sử dụng khác của there

Bạn có thể nói there will be, there must be, there used to be, ...:

- Will there be many people at the party?

(Sẽ có nhiều người tới dự tiệc chứ?)

- "Is there a flight to Paris this evening?" "There might be. I'll phone the airport."

("Tối nay có chuyến bay tới Pari chứ?" "Có thể có. Tôi sẽ gọi điện thoại tới sân bay.")

- If people drove more carefully, there wouldn't be so many accidents.

(Nếu mọi người lái xe cẩn thận hơn, có lẽ sẽ không có nhiều tai nạn như vậy.)

Tương tự: there must have been, there should have been, ...

- There was a flight on. There must have been somebody at home.

(Có ánh sáng đèn. Chắc phải có ai đó ở nhà.)

C. So sánh there và it trong tiếng Anh

Bạn theo dõi các ví dụ sau từ đó phân biệt sự khác nhau giữa there và it:

- They live on a busy road. There must be a lot of noise from the traffic.

(Họ sống ở một đường phố đông đúc. Chắc xe cộ ồn ào lắm.)

- They live on a busy main road. It must be very noisy.

(Họ sống ở một đường phố chính đông đúc. Nơi đó chắc rất ồn ào.)

- There used to be a cinema in King street but it closed a few years ago. That buiding is now a supermarket. It used to be a cinema.

(Trước kia có một rạp chiếu phim ở phố King nhưng nó đã bị đóng cửa cách đây vài năm. Tòa nhà đó bây giờ là siêu thị. Nơi đó trước kia từng là rạp chiếu phim.)

Bạn cũng có thể nói there is sure / certain / likely to be something như trong ví dụ:

- There is sure to be a flight to Paris this evening.

(Chắc chắn có một chuyến bay tới Pari tối nay.)

D. Cách sử dụng it trong tiếng Anh

Chúng ta dùng it trong các câu như sau đây::

- It's dangerous to walk in the road. (It = to walk in the road)

(Đi bộ dưới lòng đường rất nguy hiểm.)

Thường chúng ta không nói "to walk in the road is dangerous" mà thường bắt đầu bằng It...

Ví dụ:

- It didn't take us long to get here. (It = to get here)

(Chúng ta đã không mất nhiều thời gian để tới đây.)

- It's a pity (that) Sandra can't come to the party.

(It = that Sarah can't come)

(Thật đáng tiếc là Sandra không thể tới dự tiệc được.)

- Let's go. It's not worth waiting any longer. (It = waiting any longer)

(Mình đi thôi. Chờ đợi thêm chẳng ích gì đâu.)

Ta dùng it để nói về khoảng cách thời gian và thời tiết:

Ví dụ:

- It's a long way from here to the airport.

(Từ đây tới sân bay là một quãng đường dài.)

-How far is it to the airport?

(Đường tới sân bay bao xa?)

- What day is it today?

(Hôm nay là ngày thứ mấy?)

- It's a long time since I last saw you.

(Cũng đã lâu từ khi tôi thấy anh lần cuối.)

- It's going to be a nice day.

(Sẽ là một ngày tuyệt vời.)

- It was windy. (nhưng "There was a cold wind.")

(Trời có gió. (Nhưng 'có gió lạnh').)
